An international team of researchers has discovered an active volcanic germ underneath the Pine Island Glacier , located in western Antarctica . It was already known that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet ( WAIS ) sits over a major volcanic rift organisation , but actually finding the volcanoes has not been easy .
As reported inNature Communications , the researchers were able-bodied to line up the origin thanks to chemical substance traces in the water system that could n’t have come up from anywhere else . The find was serendipitous . The investigator were in reality read the stability of the WAIS .
