At this point , almost everyone on The Vampire Diaries is a aggregative liquidator — but even more than that , the show is about how our foolish notions of “ romance ” are a pure distraction from the wickedness of our violent world . And last Nox ’s instalment beautifully uncovered the unromantic trueness about Damon and Stefan .

I honestly thought last nighttime ’s installment of TVD was going to a awful place , for a good long while . The “ A ” floor take Elena come tops - hypnotized / oblige to forget Damon by Alaric , which spells two things : 1 ) A clip show of Damon / Elena moments , while Elena narrates all the stuff we already watch . 2 ) Elena explaining , yet again , why she loves this serious , inconceivable , dimpletastic vamp .
And meanwhile , the “ B ” story is all about Enzo and Caroline chase down Stefan in his new sprightliness , and reminding him that Damon is still dead , and accidentally that Elena is still lovable .
But then the episode unexpectedly buy the farm to a very ugly piazza , showing that Julie Plec ( who wrote it ) is still a passe-partout of pull the carpeting out from under us , even on a show that ’s done everything five time .
At the oddment of the episode , after all of the Damon - and - Elena “ memory lane ” hooey , we ’re still no closer to find the “ signature computer storage ” ( sounds like an detail on a menu at an Olive Garden ) that anchors Elena ’s passion for the psychotic person , so Alaric can snuff it out and Elena can move on . Until Caroline nail the problem : Elena ca n’t admit to herself that she fell for Damon while she was still “ with ” Stefan .
Once that ’s solved , it ’s gentle — the “ signature ” memory is Damon being there for Elena when Stefan was off being a serial killer or something , and Damon selflessly bringing Elena a necklace that reminds her of Stefan .
And once that memory is erased , Elena no longer loves Damon — and instantly she has a topnotch pictorial memory of the time when Damon snapped Jeremy ’s neck . He murdered her pal . Of of course , Jeremy suffer salutary , because he had a magic band on , but Damon did n’t know that would occur . Elena ’s hokey feelings for Damon have kept her from face the fact that he dispatch her brother . Which is a hell on earth of a commentary on honey , if you guess about it .
Meanwhile , Stefan ’s new semi - perfect life is n’t just him putting Damon behind him — it ’s also Stefan pretend to be a normal soul for a while . Enzo tries to convert Stefan that he ’s still a “ cervix person ” — intend a vampire , but apparently also mean that both Enzo and Stefan care to relegate ( or rip ) the great unwashed ’s neck sometimes . As Enzo does at the end of the sequence to Stefan ’s new girlfriend .
sure enough , Stefan is just mind his own business in this episode . But he ’s also kind of a hawkshaw , as Caroline point out . He ’s blowing off his friends in their minute of demand , and also lie to his new girlfriend and kind of treat her like diddley in the unconscious process .
And the sequence draw a kind of a clever parallel between the two Salvatore brothers — they ’re both entire monsters , with a vast trail of bodies behind them . And they both get gussied up with romantic impression to shroud their true monster . The conflict , apparently , is that Damon knows he ’s a freak and Stefan sort of believes the quixotic gauze that makes him depend like an okay person . Of of course , you could argue that Stefan is better than Damon because he believes in his romantic façade , and that keeps him pretty on the rails sometimes .
In any showcase , the melodic theme of the instalment seems to be “ moving on ” — both Stefan and Elena are make effort to forget Damon and move on . But Elena is doing it literally , and Stefan only figuratively — and yet , it seems potential that Elena ’s attempt will bite her in the ass just as badly as Stefan ’s has . Also , Stefan really should check that Enzo dies permanently this time .
Meanwhile , we also see a slew more of what ’s been happening with Damon and Bonnie , who are wedge relive the same day in 1994 over and over again , in an apparently empty Mystic Falls . Except that it turns out someone else is there with them . Oh , and Bonnie has found her Gram ’ old lost grimoire and is test to relearn magic , with not much success . And Damon apparently does n’t need blood any more , or the “ Groundhog Day ” thing means he never convey too hungry .
And in the episode ’s “ D ” plot , Jeremy and Matt are still fight back a lot because Jeremy is being a slob and does n’t care about anything any more , since his girlfriend lied to him and give out — and in fact , the episode ’s most moving , emotionally raw scene involves Jeremy leaving a prospicient , tortured message on Bonnie ’s voice mail that she ’ll never get to hear . Jeremy is shacking up with the cleaning lady that Elena well-nigh belt down last week , and then it turn she ’s a gondola stealer — so Matt is doubly as eager to be disembarrass of her .
And Matt ’s desire authority number Tripp , play by the sheriff from Eureka , change by reversal out to be a “ bad guy ” ( by this show ’s middling skew definition ) — we see him murder a gang of vampires by push back them over the line into Mystic Falls , where they overtake fire and are wipe out . On any other show , he ’d credibly be considered the paladin .
But that ’s the key irony of Vampire Diaries — this show acknowledge that its main character reference are all malefic , and that its love affair is just a sweet flowery camouflage for psychopaths . And then it wallows in the romance and self - delusion anyway .
