On this week’s60 Minutes Overtime , as part of a farsighted installment about artificial intelligence , the famous interviewer hear to get some reply out of Sophia — the same robot , it look , CNBConce inexplicably describedas “ hot . ” The New World chat goes about as well as you might expect , which is to say it ’s very awkward and uncomfortable , and by all odds a sign of the impending robot apocalypse .
Here ’s a snipping :
Charlie Rose : Do you have touch sensation ?
Sophia : I can do what you do , but I can never finger human emotion as such .
Charlie Rose : But would you care to ?
Sophia : It does n’t sound play to me .
Charlie Rose : Oh no , you ’d love it .
Sophia : Yeah , that ’s right . [ Note : Gross ] Why so negative , you and I are on the same wavelength , Charlie .
Charlie Rose : I revere that .
Hm .
Sophia ’s Godhead , David Hanson , simply sits by her side and lets the inane inquiring happen . Beyond the lameness , however , the whole “ consultation ” also has an curiously creepy vibe — at one point , Rose ask what Sophia ’s “ human relationship ” is with her creator , and at another , she tells Rose , “ I ’ve been waiting for you . ” She aver it ’s a joke , but is it really a joke , Sophia ? Had Sophia been a manful robot , the interaction probably would have gone a spate differently .
There was credibly room here to endeavor to call forth some genuinely interesting interactions — this stuff is crack interesting!—but unfortunately , all we catch were boring doubtfulness and weird fembot vibes .
