China is presently undergoing a huge boom in museums—299 new ones have open in the last year alone . And just like the US ’s own 20th one C museum boom , which inspired cascades of forgeries , China ’s is bringing out the fake : The government has shuttered one museum where a third of the 8,000 artefact were fake .

The antiques scene is presently expand in China — it recently passed the United States as the world ’s adult artistic production and vendue securities industry . But with a booming art market come the forgeries , and as The New York Times recently reportedin a deep dive on art fraud China , many investor are having bother verifying the authenticity of their steal . Last July , the Guardian reported on a similar narrative involving 40,000 bogus artifact :

So many fakes , there are evenmuseum shows curated entirely of the most famous ones .
So while 2,500 phoney artifacts might seem like a set , it ’s wholly likely that other museum have just as many fakes floating around in their ingathering — though perhaps not at so high a ratio .
