My friend stated that Joseph Campbell is authoritative because he felt that for any draw a bead on fan or writer , “ A Hero ’s Journey ” would be postulate reading . The “ classics ” do not define education in most depicted object . I understood the conception of evolution long before I read Darwin , because I had show other record on the subject . After I read Darwin , I can not say that I understood it any better . Darwin had the original concept , yes . He was really thorough about it , yes . But it is very possible to understand evolution without ever having understand Darwin . It is potential to LOVE fantasy without ever having read the Silmarillion ( heck , I have read it and I believe it lessened my love of the musical style more or less . pitiful , Tolkien ) .
interpret what you like . Be inspired by what inspires you . Do not feel pressure to be inspired on someone else ’s terms .
I was reminded of this contention again yesterday as I tweeted that I had watched the first episode ofNeil DeGrasse Tyson ’s Cosmos . It was okay .

It was my first exposure to Cosmos . I have never seen the Carl Sagan version . I was too young for it , and was raised primarily on Bill Nye , Ranger Rick and the Magic School Bus ( the “ inside the body ” ledger and episode reefer in my headland today . INSPIRING AS ANYTHING ) . My parent are not scientist , and I ’m not trusted they ’ve ever see Cosmos either . I never even find out of it until , likeEd , I heard about it on twitter a few years ago , looked it up , and saw what it was .
But of course of study , on twitter , every time I reveal I have n’t seen the original Cosmos , I get a draw of “ WHUT ? ! ” “ NO ! ” “ HOW ? ! ” I have even been told at clock time that I ’m not a true skill communicator because I have n’t seen it and been inspire by it .
THAT . IS . CRAP .

It is completely possible to be inspire in skill without having see Carl Sagan . Heck , it is completely possible to have visit Carl Sagan , go “ meh , ” and be inspired by something else ! Carl Sagan is believably ( to this day of the month , still have n’t seen it ) great telly . Probably very inspirational to lots of people . I by no agency require to pick apart serious Sci Comm . But it wo n’t be inspirational to everyone . And that ’s ok ! Matthew Francis put it best .

hoi polloi who ask you to read or watch or be inspire by certain things are people who desire to believe there is one genuine track to science , fantasy , etc . The route they carry , the reliable one , the respectable one .
Those people need to get over themselves .
Do not bear or require everyone to be animate by the same thing you are inspired by . consent that what animate you may NOT inspire someone else . Let ’s all be inspired in our own way of life . After all , the spot is the aspiration , not where it come from .
