Initially , the helicopters were break to be helo - jacked Army Apache gunships . However , there was a passably nerveless pattern chance here . So we decide to come up with gunships disguise as civilian word and hitch copters . It was fun , but very challenging . These copters had to be armed to the tooth , but could n’t be exposed until the moment of a surprise fire .

So I came up with the concept that the cabin doors crack open like stabilizer wings exposing the jump on armament . I thought if they could pull this off , it would be a kick a$$ instant in the film .
