Despite do it that interruptions hamper productivity , most people do n’t think too much abouthow distractions affect their work . It may be obvious that break will increase the prison term it takes to finish a undertaking , but does the quality of that work lose , too ? The short answer is yes , as we have discovered in a novel job of research my colleagues and I are conducting at George Mason University .

The sidereal day before I commence writing this post , I decided to run a small - plate case report on myself to count the act of times I was interrupt during the day . I did not silence my phone — nor did I invalid any notifications ( e.g. , e-mail , Facebook ) — so I could get an accurate estimate of the issue of interruptions I have . The study only lasted about two hour ; I flummox so distracted , I could n’t any work done . [ NSFW ? Workers expose Their Favorite Online Distractions ]

In those two time of day , I receive five text edition message , one telephone call , about a dozen messages on Gchat and six electronic mail . A fellow alum studentwanderedinto my room double to strike up a conversation . Oh , did I mention this all occurred from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on a Monday , on campus , in July ? At this prison term , the campus is stark , and it is one of the least likely times to be break up outside of the weekend .

After the experiment , I decided to go back to my honest-to-goodness strategy of silencing my phone and shutting my threshold , because I am much more fat when I can focus on what I ’m doing . I imagine you are , too , as this is borne out in our new research .

To the best of my knowledge , the Applied Performance Research Lab in the Human Factors and Applied Cognition Department at George Mason Universityis the first grouping to investigate whether interruptions affect the timber of employment . The majority of existing research on interruptions has used time and computer error as the primary measures of disruption . These metrics are sane and can help associate a cost with the effects of interruptions . However , in many situations , a loss of time and a few more errors are less important than the damage to the work ’s overall caliber .

For example , would it matter if you took an additional 30 minutes to compose an essay for class because of a few interruptions ? Probably not , unless you missed a specific deadline . But what if those same interruptions stand for you wrote a bad essay ? A modest grade would credibly bother you more than the excess meter expend writing . Inour discipline , just published in the journalHuman constituent , we conduct two experiments to test the surmise that interruptions harm quality . In the first experiment , we asked participants to draft and drop a line three different essays . The essay prompts came from a stock banking company of topic that the College Board practice in the SAT . All participants were bookman at George Mason University with an average age of 23.6 year and were fluent in English . Participants served in all three condition : interrupted while committal to writing , disturb while outlining , and no intermission at all ( the control ) .

In the break conditions , participants were interrupted three freestanding times for 60 second each and asked to complete maths problem . ( Importantly , when participants lost clock time to interruptions , they got to make up that time after the break ; this ensured that every participant had the same amount of total metre to work on the essay , regardless of condition . ) Two independent graders — who had no other affiliation with the study and were blind to the consideration — valuate all essays using the College BoardEssay Scoring Guide . Such scores range from 0 to 6 .

My co-worker and I found that interruption during either the outlining or piece of writing stage importantly reduce the timber of the essays — by more or less half a point . Additionally , participants who were interrupted in the writing phase angle produced significantly fewer words than those from the control chemical group . However , the word tally did not change when the interruptions occurred during the essay - outlining stage , even though the quality was cut . This finding suggests that two dissimilar reason may be reducing the quality , and we are continuing to search those potential causes now .

Extra prison term does n’t serve

In another experimentation from that same study , we aimed to specify whether pass on participant more time would master the lineament step-down . We were concerned that participants may have feel rushed or ran out of time before to the full explicate their essay . Therefore , we afford participants up to 20 minute , as oppose to 12 , for their essay writing phase angle . All participants finished before the 20 - minute time allotment . The upshot did not change ; once again , break bring down the quality of the essay by approximately half a point .

Individual analytic thinking of the raw data from both experiments paint a gloomy picture , as well . No participant scored higher when disrupt equate to the no - interruption term , in either experiment . closely everyone who was interrupted did worse . In fact , 96 percent of the participants performed regretful , and 4 per centum stayed the same . to boot , we have run this experiment a few more meter since publication using flimsy modifications — such as more - standardized methods for how participants craft their outlines — and the results have come out the same every time .

Focusing in an unfocussed age

In today ’s amazing technical age , citizenry can connect with others and entree information at any time , and almost immediately . Need to call your sire who lives across the world right now ? No trouble . need to have it away about the latest and greatest sport news as shortly as it hit the wire ? No job . call for to message a colleague about lunch later today ? No problem . However , that engineering science comes with the cost of interruptions while people work .

Considering how important penning is — and , that most citizenry write day by day , whether in a report , an essay or an important email — the latest information from our study should get you thinking about how you bring . Not only will break increase the time it occupy you to land up writing , but they could also make your writing worse .

For now , the best solution to the interruption trouble seems to betuning out : When working on something significant , you should concentrate the amount of extraneous interruptions as much as possible . close your threshold , silence your headphone , and disable notification from email and social medium website like Facebook . It wo n’t stop every suspension , but it will aid .
