Kids today want more from social technology than determine something new — they want a new way of seeing themselves . Snap and Instagram ’s augmented reality lenses transubstantiate drug user into puppies , fairies , monsters , Wonder Woman , storied Jamaican singer - songwriters , and the corresponding . It ’s as if there ’s a vibrant but invisible creation all around you that you ask a smartphone to see . Unfortunately , I ’m not too keen on selfies and many of the early uses of Apple ’s ARKit , meant to democratize the technical school , are plainly boring . Using AR solely to overlaynew furniture or artworkfor your apartment imagines AR users as dull - minded consumers .
go into : Dumb Fun . While Snap and Facebook encourage you and a friend to transmogrify yourselves into something just recognisable , this AR app confuse you completely , call on your surroundings into montage art .
I ’d call it “ ARt , ” but that suggests a story of pretension in Dumb Fun that ’s mercifully absentminded , considering its creator , Tim Moore , is a lensman , coder , and montage artist . There are no persnickety nozzle here .

Dumb Fun blankets your surround insurreal digital ephemera : red lips and falls , colored bouquets of orchid , Microsoft Word windows with haikus write in them , a ghastly potpourri of disembodied arm and legs . The overlays are divide into four chapter , each with a different hardening of artistic production motif . Four melodic theme are destitute , $ 4 unlocks the other 12 . But , “ theme ” might be generous , as its solicitation , for me , was how enjoyably nonmeaningful it all was . For me , they were was pure aesthetic . My favorites are the nonsensical cacography of text that loop through the line like you ’re living in an unfinished Power Point . “ Do n’t get It exhaust You , ” one read . “ I Thought About You The Other sidereal day , ” another trails .
Moore made Dumb Fun in Apple ’s ARKit , but was impertinent to rick forth from it . Obviously AR is in its early day , but ARKit ’s demonstration and early waiver emphasized realism — that the AR projections would fit neatly , credibly , into your environs . Even Snapchat ’s native art initiation , a collaboration with American artist , Jeff Koons , is preoccupied with AR art that “ fit ” into surround .
Do n’t get me incorrect – that Apple ’s ARKit can calculate and respond accordingly to a changing environmental measurements is a technical feat . But it also limit all that AR ’s potential difference to the anchor of believability . If ARKit was designed for sculpturesque precision , Dumb Fun is spilled pigment , a soupy graffito made of Myspace themes .

Dumb Fun is great because it ignores ARKit ’s rigidity . On walk home from the string , or to the corner store to grab intellectual nourishment , I love putting on my earpiece and moving through the Dumb Fun distance as I walked . Kaytranada’sLite Spots , a house track build up around a slayer vocal sample , meld into the madness perfectly .
But perhaps , shrugging off rigidity is cover . Dumb Fun ’s sprawl techno - jibberish glitches oft , sometimes create too many or too few of the designs and does n’t work well with the flash on my camera , and thus is basically useless in the dark . But it ’s ARt . Or something .
