Gregg Gray :
Marine One does almost no harm to the White House lawn . Itdoesblow lots of pollen out of the trees , however . If it has been a while since the lawn was vacuumed , little bite of junk are blown from the lawn onto the expect people and surrounding area . It is really coarse when the lawn has been of late oxygenize .
Everything on the lawn has been selected to withstand twice the downward thrust of the chopper ( which is n’t cheap ) . Anything below a certain weight has to be fastened down with appropriate screws or latches .

In the photo below , you may see the three big circular stamp pad it land on . They are 8 understructure across ( the dimensions are set by the height of the door where they are lay in ) , and they spread the load of the chopper out over a much wider area than just landing on the forage would do .
The grass get under one’s skin bent a little bit , but it springs back within an minute or so in fair weather . The landing pad are n’t out there very long—30 minutes top out .
What does happen is that those somebody who have worn a dress or annulus to see the chairperson ’s arrival have to hold their garment down to keep them from being blow over their head … Any topcoats that are n’t button up will often fly all over bystander as well . As the honest-to-god saying goes , “ Hold onto your hats . ”

The Marines [ who pilot the helicopter ] have it down to a science … They do it very well and very swimmingly and , in gymnastic exercise term , they “ get the landing . ” The hardest part of it all is salt away those three landing pads , as they take up a lot of way .
