Queen Elizabethalmost always wears gloves while shaking hands at events. However,Princess Dianaabandoned the practice — andMeghan Markleappears to have followed suit.
Despite the snow and chilly temperatures during her visit to Bristol withPrince Harryon Friday, the Duchess of Sussex carried her gloves as she shook hands with well-wishers gathered outside the Old Vic theatre.
The royal mom-to-be, 37, even told one fan, “Sorry my hand is cold!”
Eleri Lynn, the curator of an exhibit on Princess Diana’s style, previously told PEOPLE why the late royal opted for skin-to-skin contact.
“She abandoned the royal protocol of wearing glovesbecause she liked to hold hands when visiting people or shake hands and have direct contact,” said Lynn.

While the Queen is often seen in one of her famous wide-brimmed hats, Diana stopped wearing hats because she said, “You can’t cuddle a child in a hat.”

Since her royal wedding, Meghan has found subtle ways to pay tribute to Harry’s mother, who died in a 1997 car accident. She has inherited several pieces of Diana’s jewelry, includinggold butterfly earringsand agold bracelet.
The former actress even paid tribute to Diana on her wedding day,wearing her aquamarine ringas the couple headed to their evening reception.
